How many porta potties does a construction site need?
A construction site needs 1 porta potty for 20 or fewer workers, then 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal for every 40 workers, under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51 Table D-1. At 200 or more workers, the rate is 1 seat and 1 urinal per 50. Our standard unit has both, so each unit counts as one set.
| Workers on site | OSHA minimum (29 CFR 1926.51 Table D-1) | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 20 or fewer | 1 toilet | A 6-person roofing crew needs 1 unit |
| 20 to 199 | 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers | 85 workers ÷ 40 = 2.1, round up to 3 units |
| 200 or more | 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers | 260 workers ÷ 50 = 5.2, round up to 6 units |
Legal minimum vs. our recommendation. OSHA sets the floor. We recommend 1 unit per 10 workers for a 40-hour week on one weekly service, because a 60-gallon tank fills faster than the rule assumes.
For 50-hour weeks or summer heat, add a second weekly service. Official text: 29 CFR 1926.51 on eCFR.

Do construction crews need a hand wash station?
Construction crews need washing facilities under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(f) when they apply paints, coatings, herbicides or insecticides, or work with other harmful materials. The rule calls for running water, soap and towels. For other crews, a hand wash station is not always required but cuts illness on long jobs.
Our 2-station hand wash station holds 22 gallons and serves about 350 washes. We refill it on each weekly visit. See hand wash station specs.
Porta potties for high-rise and multi-floor jobs
High-rise jobs use compact units that a crane or elevator can lift to upper floors. A reference model, the PolyJohn PolyLift, is 35 inches wide, 287 pounds with its roof, and holds 38 gallons. Standard units can also be lifted with a rated lifting sling. Tell us your crane schedule when you book.
Las Colinas has many mid-rise and high-rise towers. Crane lifts need a scheduled window, a rated sling and a level landing spot on the floor. We work with your superintendent on the timing. Spec source: PolyJohn PolyLift.
Where should a job site porta potty go?
Place a job site porta potty on level ground within about 100 feet of where our service truck can park, away from trenches, crane swing paths and material drop zones. Keep the door facing away from the street for privacy. In Highland Park, units must go behind the home where an alley exists.
| Requirement | Standard / deluxe unit | Wheelchair-accessible unit | Restroom trailer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gate or path width | 4 ft or wider (unit is 43.5–47 in wide) | 5.5 ft or wider (unit is 62 in wide) | Truck access to the spot; 10 ft wide drive |
| Overhead clearance | 8 ft (unit is 91 in tall) | 8 ft | 12 ft for the truck and A/C unit |
| Ground | Level and firm: concrete, gravel, packed dirt or grass | Level, firm and on an accessible route | Level within a few inches; blocks used to level |
| Distance from service truck | Within about 100 ft of where our truck can park | Within about 100 ft | Truck must back up to the trailer |
| Power and water | None | None | 20-amp, 110-volt outlet within 50 ft, or a generator; garden hose optional |
Some cities we serve have their own rules. Southlake's residential guidelines say to "provide a portable restroom facility on job sites unless an indoor toilet is available," and inspections can be withheld if sanitation is missing. Highland Park requires screening on 3 sides for units visible from the street. See our Southlake and Highland Park pages.
Irving construction projects we support
We place job site units across Irving, from home remodels in the Heritage District to commercial jobs in Las Colinas. Current city work includes the William Brewster Drive water and wastewater line replacement, expected through August 2027, and bridge work over West Irving Creek at Wells Road and Alan-A-Dale.
Source: City of Irving construction updates. The former Texas Stadium site was rezoned in March 2025 for a large entertainment project; as of late 2025 it was still in planning. Building permits in Irving go through the city's Building Inspections office at 825 W. Irving Blvd.
How construction rentals are billed and serviced
Construction porta potty rentals bill every 28 days and include one service visit per week: pumping, cleaning, deodorizing and restocking. The rental renews until you call to end it. Billing stops the day you call. Extra service visits, moving units on site, and rush delivery are billed per visit and shown on your quote.

Construction Site Toilets: questions we hear
Do you deliver to job sites without an address?
Yes. Send a pin drop, the nearest cross streets, or the lot number. A site contact phone number helps the driver.
Can I get a unit for a 3-day roofing job?
Yes. Short job rentals are billed as a short-term rental. Same-day delivery is available; ordering a day ahead avoids the same-day fee.
Do you accept purchase orders?
Yes, for commercial accounts. Ask about net terms and monthly statements when you call.
Can you move the unit as the job moves?
Yes. We relocate units on site for a per-move fee. Towable units are an option for road crews.
What if a unit is tipped or damaged?
Call us right away. We clean up and replace the unit. Damage from misuse or vandalism is billed, as our rental terms explain.
