Will a standard porta potty fit through my gate?
A standard porta potty fits through a gate 4 feet wide or wider, because the unit is 43.5 inches wide and our crew needs a few inches on each side. It also needs 8 feet of overhead clearance. Narrower gates mean the unit sits in the driveway or by the curb instead.
Many older Irving homes in Plymouth Park and the Heritage District have alley access. If the unit should go in through the alley, tell us when you call. The city asks that alleys keep a 14-foot clearance under tree branches (City of Irving), which also helps our truck.
How many people can use one standard unit?
One standard porta potty serves up to 10 workers for a 40-hour week with one weekly service, based on a 60-gallon tank. OSHA allows 1 unit for 20 or fewer workers, but crews over 10 fill the tank faster. Over 10 workers, add a unit or a second weekly service.
| Workers on site | OSHA minimum (29 CFR 1926.51 Table D-1) | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 20 or fewer | 1 toilet | A 6-person roofing crew needs 1 unit |
| 20 to 199 | 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers | 85 workers ÷ 40 = 2.1, round up to 3 units |
| 200 or more | 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers | 260 workers ÷ 50 = 5.2, round up to 6 units |
Best uses for a standard porta potty
A standard porta potty is the right choice for construction sites, home remodels, roofing jobs, farms, parks and long rentals where low cost matters most. It is the wrong choice for a formal wedding or a party where guests expect a sink and flushing; choose a deluxe unit for those.
- Construction sites and new-home builds
- Kitchen and bathroom remodels while the home's toilet is out
- Roofing, fencing and landscaping jobs
- Long-term rentals billed every 28 days
- Backyard parties on a budget, paired with a hand wash station
